I ran into that painting looking for images and then just had to run down the background to it, which turned out to be a wonderful illustration of the place that spinning had in medieval conceptions of ideal womanhood.
She's become less prominent here in Switzerland - in part because myths around her have been dispelled... - but she used to be such a central figure - almost like our King Alfred! Scholars even thought a seal on a fake charter attributed to her displayed a distaff...
