A lot of state formation arguments get played out in arguments about early Mesopotamia, so that debate at least touches on the Assyriologist's wheelhouse even if it also plays out in a lot of other contexts.

Yes, but the people engaging in these debates aren't Assyriologists, focus on prehistoric periods, and often aren't even archaeologists working in the Middle East.
