I agree with you that as a practical matter military history is helped or hurt in universities by the broader funding environment vis-a-vis History or the humanities writ large. 1/2

But from a methodological perspective, I personally think military history's aim should be to subvert cultural historians' tired hegemony over the field. Or better yet, possibly branch off into a more discrete subfield akin to a form of historical sociology. 2/2
