My theory is that cats possess an extra sense, that allows them to precisely detect the focus of your attention. According to cats, the only proper focus of your attention is the cat. So they position themselves at your focus: computer keyboard, book, monitor, etc.
Well, my cats made an absolute nuisance of themselves during (zoom) lecture. Some of my students clearly found it endearing, but I am going to be very happy to be back in a lecture room in the fall.
