I get the sense that the spread of large chain groceries has lessened but not eliminated price variation there. But housing costs are, as I understand it, by FAR the most variable, often obscenely so.

There is variation of other kinds but it's not as predictable or - more importantly - nearly as wide as people sometimes imply. I got cheaper groceries in Chapel Hill than in Chicago but not by life-changing amounts.

It seems to me, from what I've seen data wise, that you can tell a lot of the story of economic pressure on folks these days as a story of housing scarcity and consequent high rents. Gotta build more housing.
