I get the sense that the spread of large chain groceries has lessened but not eliminated price variation there. But housing costs are, as I understand it, by FAR the most variable, often obscenely so.

There is variation of other kinds but it's not as predictable or - more importantly - nearly as wide as people sometimes imply. I got cheaper groceries in Chapel Hill than in Chicago but not by life-changing amounts.
