I kinda suddenly want to write a short story about a post-LOTR community of orcs. Just surviving perhaps through transhumant goat herding in the Ephel Duath mountains, occasionally trading w/ the people repopulating Ithilien, facing hostility, but just trying to live a life.

I have such interesting questions about that society. Would it remember Sauron as some kind of god? Or perhaps try to improve relations with Faramir's folk by casting that as a dark period they're trying to put behind them?

Presumably the revanchist orcs would end up being crushed in the field by Gondor, who in turn can't permanently root the orcs out of their mountain homes.

Oh, it'd create a classic insurgency situation. You'd have younger, hot-headed orcs raiding human settlements, while wiser heads tried to restrain their 'radicals' and Gondor retaliates in standard, ham-fisted agrarian fashion, minting new 'radicals' each time.

Creating the sort of generational cycles of violence you see in a lot of hill-people/valley-people encounters.
