I kinda suddenly want to write a short story about a post-LOTR community of orcs. Just surviving perhaps through transhumant goat herding in the Ephel Duath mountains, occasionally trading w/ the people repopulating Ithilien, facing hostility, but just trying to live a life.

Alas that I have no time to write such a thing and so many other things to write. Oh well, one more thing to add into the ideas folder for the future.

I would like to think - taking LOTR as its own setting and not purely an imagined mythic past - that the scattered orcs who had once fought for Sauron and Morgoth would remember their dark masters with loathing, and possibly gradually integrate through independent cultural growt
-
That's my thinking. Especially with Sauron's domination and control out of the way, the orcs would be, for the first time, free to chart their own path truly unencumbered by it. What would they do with that freedom? Such a fascinating question!

"That was a long time ago, and we of the Grimtooth clan prefer to look forward, not backward"

Do they ask themselves, "Are we the baddies?"
-
Well, I mean, this is post-LOTR, so the Gondorians are really in the driver's seat and the orcs aren't making war anymore. So probably they're asking themselves, '*were* we the baddies?'

i mean, both, right? there are the orcs who want to Make Orcs Great Again and there are the Reform Orcs who are trying to do the other thing
-
Right, exactly. And they're going to be in the same communities trying to figure out where exactly they fit in a post-Dark-Lord world. But like, spending most of the time keeping track of the goats, because survival is hard work in a pre-modern economy.

Pretty sure it's canon orcs hated Morgoth, and probably Sauron too. The dialogue in TT and RotK reeks more of fear than reverence. Though Sauron did pretend to be a god to humans. But it's also canon that orcs hated everything. Society of low-empathy thugs.

Are orcs capable of reproduction? To they have genders? What does a society look like when it's doomed to die off?
-
We've actually got an answer for this: yes. Tolkien mentions that orcs reproduce in the same fashion as the Children of Illuvatar, and therefore that there must have been orc-women.
