The wife of a blacksmith somewhere in Roman Italy. I want to know what her work-role in the household is, I want to know how she views the world, her relationship to the state, everything. We have so little to go on when it comes to 'working class' (so to speak) Roman women.https://twitter.com/rebecca_fachner/status/1366390986428076039 …

My other thought was a female agricultural worker - perhaps an enslaved woman on a large Roman estate, or the wife of a small Roman farmer. But we know a tiny, itsy-bitsy bit more about their lives. Not much more - not nearly enough - but a little bit more.

I'm a little curious about that. Your series was great on the process, but I'm wondering about blacksmithing on an institutional scale. How many blacksmiths were making equipment for the legions? how were they paid and organized?

My impression is that legions past the Middle Republic were better equipped than their contemporaries? ie each man had iron chest armor in addition to sword, shield and helmet. How did the Romans manage that?
