The wife of a blacksmith somewhere in Roman Italy. I want to know what her work-role in the household is, I want to know how she views the world, her relationship to the state, everything. Well and I can reconstruct a lot of what her husband does. We know how blacksmithing works, we have some attestation of the trade in the evidence. We know how a blacksmith votes in the Roman Republic. But we know basically *nothing* about her life for certain and I wish we did.

There’s a book called Darwin’s Cathedral which made the argument that Roman women were sidelined by their (pagan) religion and Christianity was able to take root due to its emphasis on family. Do you think there’s any truth to that?
