It's a product of age and familiarity, of course, but is still a bit silly that, say, '(Faulty) historical memory in Braveheart (1995)' is probably a lot more likely to get by as a conference paper than 'Historical Memory in Crusader Kings III (2020)'...

...despite the fact that CK3 frankly engages more deeply with the historical subject matter (in ways both great and faltering, see: https://acoup.blog/2020/09/11/miscellanea-my-thoughts-on-crusader-kings-iii/ … ) than something like Braveheart.

I think it goes hand in hand with video games being considered a more “shallow” medium, when it’s arguably one of the fastest growing forms of learning for popular understanding of the past.

I would be very hard pressed to identify which parts of the Crusader Kings campaign set ups are based in either dubious history or simplified for game purposes. Likewise, I’ve completely lost track of the order of events leading up to World War 2 thanks to Hearts of Iron 4.

Probably not the reason, but as a game developer, games are an extremely ephemeral medium. Braveheart will probably always be accessible, while a more recent game may no longer run. Certainly many iOS games cannot be obtained any more and don’t run on recent phones.
