Worth checking out Livy 7.41.8 for mention of the equites (cav) getting 3 times as much pay as pedites (inf). I think this is the earliest incidence of stratified pay in Roman Army.
And also note Plb. 6.39.12-14. Earlier author, but the data-point placed later chronologically. On the conversions, note Crawford, Coinage and Money in the Roman Republic (1985), 147. Cf. also Plautus, Mostellaris 357.

And on *all* of that, note Michael Taylor, Soldiers and Silver (2020), which also includes some interesting comparative data with other pay-rates in the Hellenistic Mediterranean.

Oh I'm definitely going to read this! Have been thinking recently how weird that classical greek pay scales bear so much similarity to pedites and equites booty, pay and land distribution ratios.
