I ended up not putting any images to this post. I considered using historical pictures of versions of the cult of the badass, but I didn't want Nazis slathered all over the blog and I also thought it made the nuances of the point less clear...
...because I don't think Pressfield or (some) other Cult of the Badass types think they are trading in proto-fascist ideology. I don't think they want to do that. They just don't realize. And my normal image expedient of cat pictures seemed a bit too frivolous for the topic.
In any event, I think it stands just fine as a pure essay, so that's how I'm going to leave it, I think. At least for now.
It's a deeply seductive ideology that speaks to some of the ways humans aren't really wired for the modern world we've built. But, you know, it's also a very, very bad ideology that invariably leads to horrible, dark places.
*gasp* I never would have guessed! But all sarcasm aside I'm really looking forward to reading your more informed and detailed dissection of this myth's connection to fascist ideology.
