I was on a podcast! Now up, I talk historical empires as they compare to the 'Imperium of Man' from the Warhammer 40k science fiction setting with the great folks over at the Chapter Tactics podcast: https://www.frontlinegaming.org/2021/02/15/chapter-tactics-194-how-the-imperium-of-man-compares-to-other-empires-in-history/ …

Now I think some might ask why go on a sci-fi gaming podcast - it's something that some academics might not take very seriously. But here's the thing: if you are going to do public engagement history, you have to engage the public, which means you have to go where they are.

As I've talked about before, we need to be (re)building support for the humanities and part of that is showing that our sort of work and expertise can enrich the lives of folks who are not necessarily just our students.

And of course one of the great boons that exposure to the humanities brings is that it allows us to explore and enjoy our fiction - even fairly fantastical fiction like 40k - more deeply as we bring a richer and deeper understanding to it.

So why do a 40k podcast? Well, because they asked me and it was great fun for me, for one. But more broadly, because I am hoping that some of their listeners might have their historical interest piqued in any of the topics I mentioned...

And if they find that enjoyable and interesting and enriching, it might make them better disposed to history and the humanities. Maybe they take a history course, maybe they are a bit less susceptible to politicians trying to pillage the humanities.

If we are going to reach the public in that way, to rebuild support for what we do, to make it relevant for people's lives but also for their hobbies and passions, we have to go where the people are. We can't just confine ourselves to the same handful of prestige publications.

In any event, the podcast was a ton of fun and a great conversation. We talk about how tributary empires function and how they are structured, about warriors vs. soldiers and combat motivation, and why enslaved soldiers are generally a bad idea, among many topics. Check it out!
