Er, a quote not said in the context of Thermopylae, but by Agesilaus II (in Plutarch's life of the same) during the Theban war to shame his allies into silence. It was a war the Spartans lost due to bad diplomacy by Agesilaus and a lack of allies, and so a historic self-own. https://twitter.com/CMTUHistory/status/1362150611282722819 …

I was merely sharing a pop culture reference to promote a fellow podcaster’s recent episode. That being said, so much of our understanding is shaped by pop culture. I also am interested in this. I have my students watch a film and then write an analysis on the film’s accuracy.

I apologize for my sarcastic reaction. I don’t appreciate pedantry, but honestly I do my fair share of it. (I’m working on it!) I’d love to have you as a guest on the podcast to talk about your research on the ancient world and your blog. And of course we can chat about 300!

No worries, I can take sarcasm! I really just saw an opportunity to share the context of that statement because I think it is a really telling anecdote about the Spartans and their often self-defeating arrogance lack of diplomatic skill.

Perhaps I could use to learn more diplomatic skill myself! Anyway, I'd love to do a guest spot on your podcast. Toss me a DM sometime and we can chat specifics (topics, times, etc)!
