That kind of a take would also appeal to young men who are still in their "military history is the only history" pop history phase, I used to be there a few years ago. Before I learned about critical analysis and also engaging with primary sources.
But it's also *really bad* military history! There is so much more to good milhist than this self-congratulatory nonsense. But I agree, that's exactly who it is pitched at - which is why it is so concerning to hear it is popular among officers who need to be better than that!
Yeah military history has a lot more to offer than just 'Spartans were history's biggest badasses', it's a shame that a lot of folks don't push their interest just a little bit deeper.
And of course - I will scream this to the mountains until I die - the Spartans weren't even particularly good at war. Solidly outperformed by the Macedonians, who in turn got utterly humbled by the Romans.
