I just reoriented by tests towards synthetic skills - essay writing, IDs with an emphasis on significance - where trying to cheat isn't likely to be very helpful...and that's it. My averages have barely budged, so if my students are crazy cheating, they're bad at it?

Good instructors refuse to be cops. But it turns out plenty of bad instructors out there.

You are not even remotely alone on that. I will never use those tools on my exams.

I was just a TA last year, not a professor, but I find it _really_ invasive and creepy. I preferred open book/notes exams with very lenient time settings; anything else becomes a nightmare to administrate for someone involved

Same, I had a student last semester ask if I used 'the software that tracks your eye movements because I just want to be sure that it doesn't think that I, because I get...' and I cut him off and said, "absolutely [fucking] not" (expletive as subtext)

“Respondus” just seems really authoritarian, just as a word.

I'm not using it, but emails from my university's provost indicate that they expect it to be used regularly. Also, most humanities people I know aren't using it and are writing the kinds of questions/exams you are. Maybe our colleagues over in the sciences are doing it?

Software like that is being used at a lot of universities. My own alma mater (god it's weird that I can say that now) had one made in-house that takes screenshots of students screens and records the name and path of any documents students opened.

None of my profs in my last two terms insisted on students using this software, and some of them outright said that they felt uncomfortable forcing students to use it.
