Meant to say, I thought it was a great essay on the topic. I think for all of the arguing, it describes how changing the classics is going to get done - department by department, changing to meet the particular demands of particular universities.

I have my own thoughts about where I'd take a department, mostly oriented towards larger state-school departments, since that's where my teaching experience (grad student, adjunct) has been. But different schools are different and require different solutions.
What I think we clearly cannot do is just hold a steady course. Enrollments decline, administrators are eager to nuke departments, even at R1 state schools and we risk letting slip a link in the long chain back. We've got to do better in appealing to students, the public, etc.

Absolutely! I've never had trouble filling intro ancient history classes and keeping them full. But we've got departments sinking - like U-Vermont, most recently. And what I worry about is that we sit atop centuries-long projects to make Greek and Latin lit. accessible....
