I translated Vichy propaganda French->English and came upon the word "métropole," which has different connotations based on the English translation (metropolis, homeland, parent state of a colony or mainland France). I used "métropole" untranslated+explanatory footnotes.
Yeah, I think metropole is one of those words you want to leave untranslated. Certainly I think most scholars do when discussing imperialism or France (or French imperialism), treating it as a technical loan-word for a particular idea.
