Now retired, Richard Minear (whose classes I took at @UMassHistory ) his phrase for this was 'translation is treason' and in a class setting he brought that home by exposing some of the compromises in the translation of a Japanese novel...that, as I recall, he translated. 7/8
Glad that I had that lesson so early - beware of translations, especially of abstract concepts! Chances are there are a lot of shades of meaning (perhaps important ones) which won't quite match up! end/8
There’s a great example from Thailand. A hot sauce with the motto “Guaranteed to burn twice” was translated into Thai. They used the Thai word for “the burn of chilli,” which has the connotation of “tasty.” So the motto was “guaranteed to taste good twice.”
It's now called "shame on you" sauce.
I have both Norwegian and Swedish as native languages. VERY similar languages. But in rare instances *the same word*, while having the same meaning, has subtle differences. Often hard to get a grip on why it's different, and even harder to explain to others. Translation is hard!
