Also, again and again: deciding that some of the violence in the Crusades is awful but some is ok is deeply fucked up. Yes, the Fourth Crusade was BAD. Yes, holy God, the pogroms in the First were MONSTROUS. EVERY CRUSADE LEFT TO MURDER MUSLIMS AND ARE BAD FOR THAT TOO.
People defend the fourth crusade?! Why? Aggressive war is bad, but one could at least say of some of the other crusades that they generally functioned within the (bad) rules of war at the time. Even that can't be said of the fourth crusade.
Oh no, they condemn the Fourche Crusade... ...and ONLY the Fourth Crusade. Which is ALSO a problem.
So, to be fair, I think if we're going to condemn empire, we ought to be equal opportunity condemners. If Caesar is bad, so is Cyrus II. Imperialism is not a unique institution anywhere. But yeah, wars of pure bloody conquest are bad.
