I am really enjoying these little Monday missives. Have a quick read and learn about my excitement over a new Total War game.https://twitter.com/historyrespawn/status/1358792737131278338 …

KC:D is interesting, though a case where I am not sure the juice is worth the squeeze. The recreation of a pre-modern landscape, bright colors and all, is great. Some of the assumptions about people in that society are less great. But the pacing and combat are a bit of a slog.

I really must give it a go, but I'm ready to be kind of disappointed, if that makes sense? I remember at the time some people really got into it, some could not understand the appeal, and there was a fair amount of discussion about the whole "historical accuracy" thing.

It has been a while, but the whole 'historical accuracy' thing was uneven - it is accurate about the things the creators want, which is to say the armor and weapons and the elements of society that make boring-white-man Henry the center around which the story revolves.

But for the non-Czech characters, or the female characters, less so. The Cumans are especially badly done by, being essentially barbarian-villains. None of the major characters are actually farmers (some smiths and millers) which was striking to me.

So it is the sort of game that will lovingly recreate a houndskull bascinet, but not a single actual farmer-peasant. It is the sort of game that meticulously recreates the artwork in a small town church, but does little to give a sense of the place of religion in the society.

That, along with the fact that you have to put in something like 10-15 hours before your character (not you, the character) is good enough at fighting (the one thing you do) for you to hold your own in a fight left me more than a bit disappointed.

Okay well now you are talking me out of it... but yes, this idea of who decided what was historically accurate always jumped out at me when I read coverage of this game. I'm kind of intrigued by the doc... it could be rather awful.
