KC:D is interesting, though a case where I am not sure the juice is worth the squeeze. The recreation of a pre-modern landscape, bright colors and all, is great. Some of the assumptions about people in that society are less great. But the pacing and combat are a bit of a slog.

I mean, it would be really clever if they had done that, but they haven't. The story starts slow, the main character is a bit flat, and you start the game being basically terrible at everything. There's a story justification for that, but that doesn't make it fun.

The beautiful game world they built would be better in a more open game (KC:D's story is very much 'on rails'), but KC:D is mechanically very much a combat game. In which your character is pointedly untrained in combat.

I remember a lot of the trailers and such kind of imply you could, say, be a knight! or a monk! or a blacksmith! or a thief! But really, the game is much more narrow - about becoming a noble's man-at-arms retainer. That always felt like a missed opportunity.
