In my ideal world, we'd do this by transforming existing departments, in part because I think it makes scholarly sense in light of the interconnections and in part because if we invite the demolition of classics departments we are unlikely to find them replaced by anything.
It's interesting that whole fields of study are striving to elevate voices which proclaim that field inherently evil and campaign for its destruction. Popper's "Paradox of Tolerance" comes to mind.
The problem is the field DOES need reform. But it must change from a position of profound weakness, to manage existential transformation while teetering on the brink of extinction.
