Fun fact: when historians are asked to review book proposals for university presses now, we're usually required to declare war on military history and to explain how we have forgotten that the best way to avoid conflict is to study it.
What drives me nuts about all of those takes is that Thucydides' take on this was already more sensible and sophisticated, rooted in human nature. And no one ever quotes that!

It's nowhere near as snappy as "History repeats itself." That makes it harder to repeat. "History repeats itself" is easy to repeat, so it gets repeated, because it's easy to repeat.
