This groundhog nonsense reminds me of an email Craig Gibson sent us during a lunar eclipse when I was in grad school at Iowa: "Hellenists: Enjoy tonight's ekleipsis, as predicted by science! Latinists: I’m sure if you clang those cymbals for an hour or so, it will go away."
Hey, but not only did the moon come back but (Plut. 17.7ff) we won the battle. Clearly, Roman religion works. QED.

If it did, they wouldn't have had to hellenize it. Of course I suspect that all that did was let them predict ahead of time exactly when they needed to be ready to clang the cymbals.
