Reduction, but not elimination. The think about education is that you are realizing marginal gains and progress resets in every generational cycle. And I'd hesitate to say 'often' in low regard. I think I say 'sometimes' in the essay.

It is certainly true that there are snobby sorts who look down on it and so it is 'sometimes' held in low regard. Hastings' claim is bigger than that: both a much stronger dislike (too strong, I'd say), but also that this dislike is the cause of MilHist not being taught.

And the latter claim is just does seem at all true. He wildly understates, for instance, the number of military history programs within history departments. See this thread for all of the programs he missed (including the one that produced me):https://twitter.com/MilHist_Lee/status/1356235981578530817 …

There are less military history offerings because there are less history offerings because universities are hiring fewer historians, in no small part because public university funding has become a one-way downward ratchet. Every recession, funding is cut and then not restored.

Even in, I must note, departments and programs with very strong enrollments. University leadership has instead tended to direct what funds they have away from instructional budgets generally and more towards STEM fields even within instructional budgets.

On that point, see...well, me, writing about it last August in the context of the disastrous effort to reopen schools in the Fall:https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/08/why-state-universities-have-no-other-choice-but-to-reopen/615565/ …
