There are less military history offerings because there are less history offerings because universities are hiring fewer historians, in no small part because public university funding has become a one-way downward ratchet. Every recession, funding is cut and then not restored.

Even in, I must note, departments and programs with very strong enrollments. University leadership has instead tended to direct what funds they have away from instructional budgets generally and more towards STEM fields even within instructional budgets.
