So, 1) I'm sorry to hear that, but 2) I still think that the decision they made not to take a single PhD from any flagship public state school anywhere is a striking and garbage bit of academic snobbery.

I don't think anyone means to suggest that having an Ivy League degree guarantees academic opportunities. I certainly know Ivy-League-Degree-Havers who stuck in the market too. The problem is that elite opportunities are closed to non-privates, regardless of quality.

And the fact is, the gap between the top tier of scholars coming out of the flagship state school programs, and those coming out of the Ivies is not that large. The difference here is snobbery, not quality.
