I have to admit, I find it a touch frustrating sometimes when I'm writing for mainsteam publications because I can't use footnotes. I try to use hyperlinks as footnotes, but sometimes I want to point to a work that isn't meaningfully online and 
And I'm sure in some cases it produces confusing hyperlinks - e.g. links to publisher book pages or amazon book pages because the only information I want the link to convey is, "This fact is in THIS book" But gotta give credit. Tis the historian's way.pic.twitter.com/rsiG718pOG
Could you make a page on your website with a list of offline sources, and then link to that?
Maybe? I've never seen that done and I'm not sure how an editor would react to a link saying 'footnotes here!'
I’m a sucker for a good footnote. They broke my habit of putting all my tangential information into parentheses.
Just to be clear: Only Terry Pratchett is legally allowed to use footnotes outside the academy. It's in the British constitution. True fact!
