I just recently finished your series on spartan society and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm almost disappointed to see this will only be three parts

A recurring idea I've seen expressed in this article and other articles on your blog is that democratic societies which switch from conscription to professional armies tend to become more vulnerable to coups by career soldiers that develop cultures at odds with civilian values.
-
Is conscription itself the important factor, or the existence of a military system that civilians cycle out of after a term of service? I can see scenarios where a "military aristocracy" uses conscription as a tool to indoctrinate its civilian populace with a "warrior ethos".

There is not an universal warrior. But some say there is an universal cop.

Very likely.
@tuchulu had something to say about Canadian police a few days ago, I think.
