Doesn't feel like we talk enough about weird it is that Dick Cheney was W's VP. How brain poisoned must we as a country have been if "elect me and this bloodthirsty charisma-free lich king will secretly run the country" could plausibly seem like a ticket-boosting pitch
I mean, in practice the pitch was that Dubya was untested in terms of legislative ability or foreign policy, whereas Cheney was Ford's Chief of Staff (1975-7), a House Rep. (79-89), and a SecDef (89-93). It was meant to blunt Gore's 'experience' edge over Dubya.

Fair to say the legislative end of that worked out better (Bush actually got a lot of stuff passed, even when he didn't have full control of congress) than the foreign policy side (oof).

But given the last four years, I can see the value of saying, "Don't worry, we'll rely heavily on the experience of others and not just wing it, and you can tell because we picked <old federal government stalwart> to be on the ticket and run a lot of things."
