Haven't read the PBSR article, but have read the Historia article now. I don't like the interpretation of visual evidence, though it matches with his very loose definition of a "hoplite phalanx" (which I think is problematic, considering the loaded nature of those terms).

While mass combat is probably present in all warfare, "The mural is an explicit piece of evidence that massed heavy infantry formations were one aspect of warfare in pre-Roman Italy, used in both attack and defence" is unconvincing.
