There's often a failure to walk through the consequences of an 'oh, this is just dues-paying' attitude when you set the dues so high that realistically only the leisured class are going to be able to pay.

Well, my answer to this is more complicated (not that complicated, but more than one tweet). I think that what matters right now is that so few people will get TT jobs coming out of it that that “bargain” just doesn’t even exist.

Oh, yes, that’s an absolutely fair criticism. I think there’s (obviously) the academic jobs problem. But either way we also deserve fair and good wages as graduate student workers. Even if it’s just grad school, it shouldn’t/can’t cater to only the already wealthy.
