I tend to say: if you think the experience of pursuing a Ph.D is something you want in and of itself, and if you are flexible in terms of careers, go for it. The upside is we are all highly employable at the end and it is an intrinsically valuable experience.

I left my PhD program years ago because I had greater need to support my family more than to reform my advisor committee for the third time. I used to say that graduate studies in the humanities eliminated the need to chose between working very hard and starving to death.
