Hey twitter, word-choice help. What's a good way to clearly express 'A thing someone does - like a job - because it is foundationally core to their identity' in contrast to a job someone does to, you know, eat. The word is, I guess 'vocation' but that feels like it has drifted?
And by 'foundational' I mean in the sense of like, "I am a farmer because my father was a farmer and my father's father was a farmer and my family are all farmers and farmer is all I shall ever be because me == farmer." That kind of born-into-it-this-is-what-I-am identity.
I'm hesitant to use vocation and I'd like something stronger and clearer if someone can think of one, because contrasting 'vocation' with 'job for pay' I think will confuse folks who hear 'vocation' and think 'vocational school.' Also, profession doesn't work because context.
'Calling' maybe? Although that might be a bit too 'British-English'.
A role? Not sure really.
I love academic linguistic problems. I think “calling” isn’t right because it’s too individual. Career is too capitalist. A craft or trade can be what you want but isn’t necessarily that. I hope all these wrong answers help.
Yeah, it can really help to refine an idea to roll it over in one's head like this, try out different words and see how they fit. It can help to define the edges of an idea.

Maybe like their trade or their craft? Both of those convey to me something more substantial than just a job to pay the bills.
