True, but in both of those cases I think we see that "belief" is a slippery fish. Xi is an ardent communist, sure, but China has unrecognizably warped the definition of communism into something Xi is comfortable feeling ardent about.

Likewise with religion, all we have to do to observe the gravitational effect pragmatism has on "belief" is observed the lifestyle difference between hardline "literalists" and mainline "reinterpreters", whose reinterpretations by no coincidence never make their lives harder.

It's fair to argue that the policies would be unrecognizable to historical Marxists, but yes that's an extraordinary claim about the ideological motivation for those policies.

At the very least, even if someone has reservations about a religion/ideology, if it's dominant in their environment they'll probably at least be willing to make concessions to its normalcy to relate w/ people who are fully committed.

I personally use Bible verses and stories to illustrate a point to evangelicals in my life despite having unofficially left the faith. I'm very aware of the good points of the church and understand the reason people are drawn to it- I treat it as normal despite not being in it.

I know "not real communism" is a cliche but if we take your maxim as true then communism becomes literally whatever people say it is.
