Certainly much of Cicero's persona is tied to the performative aspects of Roman Republican politics, but he had to be pretty high up there in showmanship regardless.

I rather like Cicero, honestly, and I've never found his self-promotion to be off-putting (though it sure is prominent); it's so par-for-the-course for ancient literature.
