I always find the Rights worship of ancient Sparta really funny. I mean, the pederasty not withstanding, didn't Sparta basically fall into backwater status because of a lackluster military record and failure to actually incorporate new ideas?

Strange(not) for an Academic to mix his feelings about today's alt-right with the outrageous misbelief that those who saved the World from darkness were proto-fascists. Sparta is the emblem of the free World. Learn about its history and system of governance. Combat your zealotry.

Don't waste your time. How can you explain anything to people who "learn" history from movies? Don't get angry with them, no matter what they watch, read or listen, they will/can never understand. Specially when they mix history with "modern" politics.

Spartans occupy our imagination due to Thermopylae. As much a historical event as a metaphor for life (see https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poetrymagazine/poems/55230/cp-cavafy-thermopylae …). How about we don't give that up just because some group decided they look cool and pretends to mimic them, but choose to keep those symbols for us?

When the movie 300 came out, me and many others wrote that it is a film that essentially glorifies ancient fascism, and that the author of the original comic book has known right-wing tendencies. I was dismissed as a “bitter Persian” (!), but it had nothing to do with it, ofc.

And of course one of the people who was a fan and supporter and I think an adviser of that movie was prof "victor davis hanson". I read an interview with him that dates back to 2006 at the time of the movie's premiere in which he was asked that what kind of virtue did the
