Back in the old EU, there was also a doctrine-based explanation for it, that the Empire *had* better designs - the TIE-Advanced and the TIE-Defender, but chose to mass produce cheaper, expendable designs (Fighter/Interceptor) instead.

The issue for me is getting the gatling to the target under the shields. With TIEbomber, you can use power shifting to hard boost straight through, come to a stop next to the shield gen, under the shields, transfer everything to lasers and nuke the generator in seconds.
Whereas, even with boosting and drifting, I just haven't found a way to fly the Y-Wing in close that doesn't feel like lumbering in.

Oh, and cockpit visibility on them is awful, which is a meaningful factor.
