Absolutely correct. Peisistratos tried three times to make himself tyrant over Athens. It was only one the third time that he succeeded with durability. im reading this more like one of the various tremors at the end of the Roman Republic. it wasn't a Senatorial mob that day, but I see in the terror over Trump a terror over tyrants and populism; the fear from those in power contributed to the process that ended that republic.

the hyperbolic talk of how democracy nearly died is being used to justify a new "war on terror"; the predictions over a decade ago that such a war would be waged at home against the citizens came true, but its being celebrated. Acting off of fear is a damned venture.
