That sort of 'warrior culture' nonsense leads to very dark places. It is essentially a thinly painted over form of the fascist-hero and the 'cult of action' laid out by Umberto Eco in his famous essay, 'Ur Fascism.' And, you know, fascism is bad!

Yes, indeed. It certainly makes me think about the militaristic element in Imperial era cults like that of Mithras. The cult was men-only and drew heavily on veterans, disallowing slave (and probably freedmen) members, who were dominating other mystery cults of the era.

Looking forward, too. Is this a source based article in relation to ancient history or more a comment by a historian? Just interested, since the debate could use both.

The response to Pressfield is going to be mostly a comment, I think, on the distinction between 'warriors' and 'soldiers' and the weakness of the idea of specific 'warrior cultures.' Probably I'll burn half my readers by also complaining about the implied model of masculinity.
