The thought experiment doesn't seem like the absolute worst idea, in theory. "Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?" is basically a thought experiment on how a nazi would justify being a nazi, and it's a great book. But boy, handle with care.
Dystopian literature has its place, but asking the students to give their own justifications, rather than presenting the justifications the ancients give (and their problems) as a matter of the historical record is bad pedagogy.
