I find the whole debate a bit unnerving for reasons I haven't sorted out yet. I get the impression that the people that talk about it mean unity in the sense of "lets all shut up, sit down, and be very neoliberal", where the politics is a team sport, not something to get mad over

Its similar to the disdain I have for the praise of compromise and such. Perhaps those things are a metric to measure a healthy society, but holding them up as your ideals in and of themselves is like, kindergarten level morality. Or cargo cult politics, at best.

All wars end in peace, it would be nice if we could all skip to the talking and avoid a war, but I doubt that's possible without a winner. The problem with winning is those that die from inciting rhetoric. Be careful what you wish for. As a historian you should know that.
