It's not like people who carry out a coup say "We are now seizing power illegitimately". They say "We are stopping the big steal", "we are counting all the legal votes", "we are protecting / restoring the constitution" or such shit.

But it's a version of the past so clearly divorced from the actual past in some cases that, when described, it feels utopian. I think there is a lot of unacknowledged borrowing there in terms of symbolism and such from other utopian revolutionary movements.

Interesting. I suppose eighteenth century revolutionaries mobilized symbols from the past to utopian ends too. (Including, ironically a Senate, a Capitol and the fasces...)
