This past fall I finally broke down and assigned the demography discussion in Part II for my Ancient Mediterranean World class alongside the Plutarch/Xenophon readings, because I was so tired of students forgetting the helots.
It felt a bit odd to assign myself, but 
I had mine read part of a chapter I wrote on Romanization and monuments. I feel you. But! It’s so hard to find transparently written good stuff!!
