I don't* get why some right-wing people idolise Spartans and not, say, the Sacred Band of Thebes who defeated them. Surely the Army of Lovers make better military role models? * I do, and I guess we all do get why.

Just taking a look now, and oh yes, the Sparta of Assassin's Creed was so infuriating, especially (for me) in how it depicted the enslavement of people in such an uncritical way.
The thing that always gets me is why "Spartan" is taken as a synonym for badass *individual* fighters, when what they actually seemed to be exceptional at relative to other Greeks (drilling and discipline via good/abundant NCOs) is a reasonably fair thing to fetishize on its own!
I might have to assign parts of this in my Greek Civs, so fab-It’s like a secret society gone even more wrong!
This past fall I finally broke down and assigned the demography discussion in Part II for my Ancient Mediterranean World class alongside the Plutarch/Xenophon readings, because I was so tired of students forgetting the helots.
