(Worth noting, I personally am less skeptical than @Roelkonijn that something like a hoplite phalanx - we might perhaps call it a proto-phalanx - was in use by 500, but I am willing to acknowledge the significant degree of uncertainty.)
I'm always having dificulty in how sources talk about engagements versus what we know about how much melee a human can actually endure (mentally and physically). /1
It's always dangerous to assume especially since I'm no particular expert in this field, but I assume most hand-to-hand was *very* short after which the lines fell back to muster up courage for another go, until one side broke. /2
