They had (or in the USA's case, still have) 
soldiers
. There is a difference, those words are not synonyms.
But to be clear, just as there is no universal warrior, there is no universal soldier either. War, war does in fact change.

This sort of thinking is, however, popular in the military--and the Army, sadly, has been very explicit about calling soldiers "Warriors" since the Iraq War, a reaction to the ambush of a maintenance battalion that proved unprepared for close combat in 2003/
Oddly, while soldiers might like the idea that they are the same as the Spartans or Romans or whatever, most are keenly aware of vast differences in culture between the services (Marines v. Air Force) and even between branches of services 2/
