We have several poems from Ausonius celebrating it: he was safe in Trier and becoming consul. And letters from Symmachus congratulating Ausonius and apologising for not joining the celebrations. Neither mentions Adrianople!
I suddenly find myself wondering what New Years 378/9 AD felt like in the Roman Empire. Did everyone breath the same sigh of relief at the end of a annus horribilis that we just did? Alas that Ammianus ends where he does.
